The 1970s and 1980s
Known worldwide for his dense, contrasted black and white images, typical of the are, bure, boke style, Moriyama has also distinguished himself by presenting contemporary life in photos of great chromatic beauty.
He uses color more rarely, not only for its descriptive quality, but above all as a sensory experience, incarnating a mysterious atmosphere in his images.
This section brings us a set of color photos found in the photographer’s files in Tokyo. The copies were made on Fujichrome paper, which allows enlargements to be made directly from the positive slide, providing greater saturation and contrast.
Some of the photographs have been taken from his own personal work, while others were published in magazines such as Camera Mainichi, Asahi Camera and Asahi Journal in the 1970s and 1980s.
The extent of color in the magazines was limited due to the high cost of color printing, which is why some of these images are little known.
Over the years, some of these photos have become famous in other versions, such as that of the woman wearing a white dress an alley in Yokosuka, well known as a black and white image.
