ISRAEL
In 1959, Scheier spent almost a month in Israel at the invitation of the Israeli government, as part of its policy to mark and promote the 10th anniversary of the founding of the country. Scheier`s photographs were the basis of eight articles entitled “A Brazilian Photographer in Israel” for the newspaper Diário de S. Paulo, with texts written by Scheier himself.
The images, and the texts written in the first person, portrayed a dynamic country, where thousand-year old traditions coexisted with modernity and cutting-edge technology. Scheier registered different aspects of life around Israel, without, however, addressing the border conflicts and wars with the Arab League dating from 1948, which led to the exodus of thousands of Palestinians. His narrative, full of personal digressions, focuses, in particular, on the human element behind the construction of a new country: the arrival of immigrants from all corners of the world, the reunions between families which had been separated by World War 2, the new generation of Israelis, life in the desert, examples of peaceful co-existence between the Arab and Jewish populations, major engineering works, and the country’s investment in art and culture. The country portrayed by Scheier promises an Israel where tolerance between the peoples who inhabit it thrives alongside social development.
In 1959, the photographs were shown in an exhibition entitled Assim vive Israel [Life in Israel] at the Congregação Israelita Paulista (CIP) in São Paulo and at the headquarters of the Brazilian Press Association (ABI) in Rio de Janeiro.
